Post-High School Options

2-Year Colleges

Two-year colleges offer programs that last up to two years that lead to a certificate or an associate degree. These include community colleges, vocational-technical colleges and career colleges.

4-Year Colleges

Four-year colleges offer four-year programs that lead to a Bachelor’s degree. These include universities and liberal arts colleges.

Military

Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, National Guard, and Navy. Joining the military is a huge commitment, so please take the time to research the website (military.com) and visit the College and Career Center to find out when representatives from each branch will be visiting DVHS.

ROTC Programs

Reserve Officer Training Corps is a college program offered at more than 1,000 colleges and universities across the United States that prepares young adults to become officers in the U.S. Military. In exchange for a paid college education and a guaranteed post- college career. Cadets commit to service in the Military after graduation. If you are interested in such a program, please visit the ROTC website.

Visual Art and Design Schools

Each art school has different eligibility requirements, so it is important to check each individual institution for entrance requirements. In addition, check online for National Portfolio Day), where high school students who wish to pursue an education in the visual and related arts can meet with representatives from colleges accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design. Representatives will be available to review your artwork, discuss their programs and answer questions about professional careers in art.

Gap Year

“A gap year is a period between completing high school and beginning college. This time can be either a semester or a full year away from traditional classroom studies. Gap years come in all shapes and sizes. They include participating in organized gap year programs abroad or domestically, working in a field of interest, civil service in the military or a national service organization, pursuing arts or athletics, and traveling the world as a tourist.” From the Think Beyond Borders website.

Vocational/Career Education Schools

A specialized college that prepares students for a specific skill-based career. These programs generally range from 2-4 years, depending on the extent of training required. Students receive a certificate of completion or Associate of Science degree at the end of the program. See the Vocational, Technical, and Career School page.
